My waffle: shade for laundry room

Posted on

I did it! I painted the laundry room and I’m totally loving it. My sad laundry room used to look like this:

Laundry room, room in need of paint,

And now it’s so much more cheerful with a new rug and a coat of Benjamin Moore’s Moonlight:

Yellows are notoriously tricky to choose, and if you remember from this post, I was having a hard time finding the right one.  But Moonlight strikes the right balance — not too in-your-face-perky and not too nursery-like. I think the addition of the Olin Rug helps ground the room and give it additional interest.

But…those shelves.  Yep. they’re ugly.  And high. My long term plans include replacing them.  But right now I’m thinking about an easier (and less expensive) addition to the window.  For $10 I can purchase a cut-to-width roller shade like the Saratoga shade from JCPenney:

Then there are plenty of tutorials on the web that explain how to add fabric to a roller shade to customize the look. But which fabric?

Kaivo is a Marimekko print:

Unikko is another Marimekko print:

Unikko also comes in a more colorful version:

The last fabric option is Dandelion  (ignore that ruler thing on the bottom):

My final idea is to buy some thick black ribbon and adhere it to the shades’ borders so it looks like this but without the words:

So what do you think? Should I DIY myself a new shade and if so, with what?  I’m really waffling on this one.
