Mom’s Waffle: Fabric for the Couch

Posted on

This brown couch has been in my parent’s living room for as long as I can remember. And for as long as I can remember, my mother has been waffling about what color fabric to reupholster it in.  Rarely have I been home for a visit when there wasn’t a fabric swatch or two lying on the couch just waiting to be analyzed.  I’ve tried to help her decide, but it’s kind of a case of the blind leading the blind, or the waffler leading the waffler, so to speak.

I’ll let my mother explain her dilemma:

My grandmother’s couch was last upholstered about 1958. It has been much loved but really needs refreshing. It will sit next to a red velvet Victorian lady’s slipper chair and across from an easy chair upholstered in a gold weave, all on a multicolored kilim rug. I’m most attracted to the “earth” velvet but the color is fairly similar to what’s on it now. Should I go for something completely different or stick with what I know works with the room?

Here’s the color “Earth” fabric that is most similar to what is currently on the couch:

She’s also considering the darker “Molasses” color:

Mom is willing to consider something completely different, like this “Garden” color:

Or something in a dark tone, like “Steel”:

Or even darker, like “Graphite”:

So what do you think — should my mom choose a fabric similar to what is currently on the couch or go for something different?

Bethany’s Waffles: Position of the Couch and Picking Accent Chairs

Posted on

For years I’ve been trying to bribe my sister-in-law, Bethany, to move out here to Seattle, but it hasn’t worked.  Now that she and her husband, Dave, have opened their own photography studio in Des Moines, Iowa — Dreamstate Photography — I might as well just give up.  But I won’t hold any grudges; in fact, I’m more than happy to post Bethany’s waffle about how best to freshen up their photography studio’s front meeting room.

Here is Bethany to explain her waffles:

Our current studio will hopefully not be our forever studio, so I am trying to make our meeting room look as warm and inviting as possible without spending a ton of money on things that may not be functional in a few years.  My first waffle is about how best to position our curvy brown couch and chairs (the actual chairs in the pictures below will be replaced…just wait until my second waffle).

Do you like the couch against the wall with the chairs to the right of it?

The couch in the corner with the chairs on either side of it?

Or the couch in the corner with the chairs on either side of the tv?

Okay, now for waffle #2: the chairs. Bethany thinks the space-saving nature of armless chairs will be a good choice for the meeting room. Here are her options:

The Suzani & Gate Print Darby Chair from Cost Plus World Market

The Mosaic Logan Armless Chair, also by Cost Plus World Market

The Fionn Chair from Pier One

The Josette Chair, also from Pier One

and the Sunflower Deco Accent Chair from Walmart

So, waffler readers, today is a two-fer. How should Bethany position her couch and chairs…and which chairs should she purchase?

Rebekah’s waffle: will the couch, chairs and rugs go with turquoise walls?

Posted on

I’m so excited to introduce today’s guest waffler: Rebekah, from the awesome blog, Potholes to Pantyhose. She’s not afraid of going bold with her walls (turquoise!) but she needs some help with the details.

Hello to all of my fellow Waffler readers!  I’m Rebekah from Potholes and Pantyhose which is where I share and photograph detailed tutorials of my DIY Projects, Recipes, Photography Tips and Remodeling Endeavors. I like to re-invent and create things around my home, but I like to do so inexpensively and with my own little flair.

Today, I need your help making some major decorating decisions. I married a man that actually cares how his home is decorated, but he’s given me the green light to redecorate the joined living and dining room spaces.

When we first moved into this house, we went very basic with the color choice in the living and dining room-as you can see here in the dining room…and here in the living room.

I’m ready for something a bit more bold, full of style and warmth.  Here is my inspirations in a nutshell:

This was the beginning of my inspiration — turquoise painted walls with orange accents:

I love these colors together.

I am definitely going to paint the walls turquoise, but here is where I’m waffling: first, do I keep the black couch and the rugs that are currently in both rooms?

and second, will the orange chairs I already have go with turquoise walls?

Also — I want to add window coverings.  Any suggestions on color?

Weigh in. I need you.  I don’t want to let my hubby down-he’s depending on me to make some good decisions. Once I see that turquoise on the wall, I may just lose it…..
