Waffler Wrap-up and Recent Poll Results

Design Sponge

Remember this waffle about the trend in reclaimed wood art? It turns out 75% of you like this trend and only 14% disapprove. So here’s the next question: would you want a whole wall of reclaimed wood in your house?

Modern Family living room

In one of the closest waffles yet, readers slightly preferred the decor in the Modern Family house to the Up All Night house, 52% to 48%.  I’m not sure about you, but I’ve been seriously tempted to paint a room in my own house Labrador Blue, the color of the Dunphy’s stairway.

Here’s a dining room painted in Labrador Blue.  What do you think?

And while we’re on the topic of paint colors, you can still vote on Jessie’s Waffle about which color to choose for her basement and Kelly’s waffle about whether or not to paint the inside of her Billy bookcase.

Have a great weekend!

My waffle: painting the dining room/living room yellow

Posted on

Yesterday I wrote about the cheery yarn bombed trees I saw in downtown Seattle; today I’m debating whether to bring some of that same sunniness to my combined living room/dining room by painting it yellow.   Eventually I would like a larger piece of art on the back wall and a drum pendant to replace the current lighting, but right now I’m thinking about color.

dining room

The main color behind the table is Kelly Moore’s Creamy Natural — a whitish green; the darker color it meets in the corner is Beach Bum — a gray green.  The built-in bookcase is a high gloss white.

The living room is mostly Beach Bum as well:

Now you may remember how I was completely waffled (yes, waffled is not officially a word) by what color to paint my laundry room. My first impulse was blue, but after many readers encouraged me to try yellow — and after many trips to the paint store — I fell in love with Benjamin Moore’s Moonlight.

So what if I painted my living room/dining room Moonlight as well? Or maybe even going a bit lighter than Moonlight? I love the pops of yellow the cushions on the green couch provide and I think it would be nice to tie the walls in…but would a whole yellow room be too much, too intense?

The truth of the matter is that the sagey green colors are nice — and even nicer on a sunny day, so maybe I should just add a few yellow accessories rather than going whole hog yellow. But when Seattle is particularly gray and rainy I think about painting this big room and bringing the sun indoors. What do you think?

My waffle: paint color for the laundry room

I have a theory that choosing a paint color is like dating.  Some colors are waaay too aggressive and egocentric: “Hi, I’m red!  I’m really, really red.  Did I mention I’m red?” Other colors, like potential mates, seem promising, but are actually kind of dull when you get to know them.  Then there are the Big Men on Campus — highly in demand and totally trendy, lots of gals love them…but will you tire of him in a few years?

For my laundry room, I’m looking for the Ken of paint colors: comforting, enduring and cheerful, just like my husband (cue the awwws….or the gagging).

Here’s my laundry room in need of some TLC:

Laundry room, room in need of paint,

I’m thinking blue, but whether it should be a gray-blue, a green-blue, a light or dark blue…that’s where the waffling begins.

Option 1 is Benjamin Moore’s Blue Wythe, a greeny-blue:

Option 2 is Benjamin Moore’s Porcelain Blue, which has some gray in it:

Option 3 is Benjamin Moore’s Labrador Blue, made popular by the tv show Modern Family:

Option 4 is Benjamin Moore’s Harbor Haze, which has a touch of gray:

Option 5 is Benjamin Moore’s In Your Eyes, a pale, cool blue.  It’s similar to Ocean Cliffs, the Kelly Moore color in our half-bath:

And finally, option 6 is Benjamin Moore’s Blue Seafoam, which is more of an aqua:

So there you have it: six potential mates for my laundry room. Which one do you like the best?
