Fantasy waffle: Nancy Meyers’ kitchens

Posted on

You know that feeling you get after a really good haircut? You look at yourself in the mirror and see a smarter, more stylish version of yourself — I am an important person on the go!  But in the back of your mind you know it’s only smoke and mirrors: after that first wash, your hair will go back to its annoying habits and idiosyncrasies.

Watching a Nancy Meyers’ movie is kind of like that for me.  Director of  The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give and It’s Complicated, Meyers’ interior sets — especially the kitchens —  are over-the-top beautiful.  In fact, they’re almost too perfect.  I mean who really lives like this?  Like a great haircut, the kitchens are awfully pretty but a bit unreal.

But today is all about the fantasy. Which of these Nancy Meyers’ kitchens most closely resembles your fantasy kitchen?

The Diane Keaton character’s light-filled, white kitchen in Something’s Gotta Give?

The Cameron Diaz character’s modern, chef’s kitchen in The Holiday?

or the Meryl Streep character’s California “casual” kitchen in It’s Complicated?

PS — If you want to read more about Nancy Meyers’ decorating in It’s Complicated, I have included an interesting article by Nicole LaPorte in The Daily Beast.

PPS — If none of the above kitchens made your heart race, I’d love to see what does. You can email me a picture and a brief description of what you like about it to mollythewaffler@gmail.com . Don’t be shy if it’s your own!

  1. I remember watching Something’s Gotta Give and thinking how much I loved the houses!!!

    • Yeah, total eye candy. I don’t remember much about the plot, but I do remember the kitchen and her (insanely large) master bedroom.

  2. I like the coziness of the last one, and fantasize about that marble island, but there is no storage!
